Carved Bamboo Brush Tray
Ch'ing Dynasty (A.D. 1644-
1911)
Width 24.5cm
Height 3.5cm
Brush trays and brush
rests serve identical
functions, being used as
somewhere to lay the brush
down for a while when
writing. The only difference
between the two is in their
shape. This example is
made from two sections
of bamboo which have been
cut in half, placed facing
upwards and glued together.
The diaphragm of the
bamboo joint has been
carved away slightly to
accommodate the stems of
the brushes.
